A paint company that specializes in oil-based paints wanted assistance in improving the paint’s drying time and gloss. The customer’s specifications were for an air-drying white synthetic finish on soybean oil-based alkyd resin.
Objective
To reduce drying time and optimize gloss levels for an air-drying white syntheticpaint. This paint was formulated with soybean oil-based alkyd resin.
Methodology
The following formulation adjustments were recommended:
- Auxiliary Drier Addition: Add calcium octoate (3% solution in mineral turpentine oil) at 2% of the total formulation. Calcium octoate acts as an auxiliary drier & enhances the effectiveness of primary driers like cobalt and zirconium octoates.
- Gloss Level Improvement: Add 0.5% of BYK-310, a silicone-containing surface additive that can reduce surface tension and improve substrate wetting to increase the overall gloss.
We did a few iterations to understand the composite's product specification. After experimenting, we recommended a modified raw material ratio to increase the proportion of the harder monomer in the copolymer and the concentration of nano-silica composited in a suitable surfactant.
Testing and Results
1. Drying Time Assessment
- Surface Dry: Achieved in 10 minutes, compared to 20 minutes for the standard sample.
- Tack-Free Time: Reduced to 2 hours from the standard 4 hours.
- Hard Dry: Completed in 22 hours, versus 28 hours for the standard product.
2. Gloss Measurement
- Gloss value at a 20-degree angle was a minimum of 90%, exceeding the standard product's 85%
Conclusion
After the incorporation of calcium octoate as an auxiliary drier, a significant improvement in the paint film’s drying characteristics was observed. Including BYK-310 in the formulation enhanced the slip, mar resistance, and gloss for the final coat. This case study reveals the importance of selecting the right additives and drying chemicals and their impact on required paint attributes.
